Visual Disappointment 2008
Visual Disappointment 2008
Subject: Visual Disappointment 2008

I was overjoyed today to be able to install the RTM edition of "Visual Studio Team System 2008 Development Edition", the new IDE by Microsoft, via MSDN.

Visual Studio Team System 2008 Development Edition Setup

My happiness was quickly gone when I learned the setup failed :(

When I saw that, after crashing, the setup program was still running, I discovered the following window

Visual Studio Team System 2008 Development Edition Setup Error

To bad the link provided wasn't all that helpful. I guess I'll try and re-install my machine and try again...

Update 9:18 PM 21st of November 2007:

After sulking for a while, I decided that I wanted to check some things before reinstalling my operating system. After looking thru my Software List, I found that the .NET framework 3.0 was still installed. Since the setup failed at the .NET framework 3.5, I decided to uninstall that framework.

.NET FrameWork 3.0 in the Software List
Uninstall .NET FrameWork 3.0
Uninstall .NET FrameWork 3.0 Confirmation
Uninstall .NET FrameWork 3.0 Completed

After uninstalling the .NET framework 3.0, I decided to give it another go.

Visual Studio Team System 2008 Development Edition Reinstall

As you can see, the setup now tells me that there is too little free space on the C drive. There wasn't a problem the first time around, so there probably was little over the required space available on the C drive at time of the install, but due to temp files, that space is no longer available. Just to be sure, I cleaned up a bit from my (small) C drive (WDC Raptor 36GB) and gave it another go.

Available Space
Visual Studio Team System 2008 Development Edition Reinstall with enough space and without .NET FrameWork 3.0

The setup is still installing, and so far, so good. My advice to you: Uninstall the .NET 3.0 framework before installing the new Visual Studio 2008 IDE and make sure you have a surplus of free space on your C drive.

Update 9:43 PM 21st of November 2007:

Install was sucessful, but here's another bug for you in the installer:

Visual Studio Team System 2008 Development Edition Setup Bug

As you can see, there result of the first (failed) attempt is shown here, not at the first install.
